Toronto Cathedral Restoration I Heather & Little

The majestic St. Michael’s Cathedral in the Garden District of Toronto, Ontario is one of the oldest churches in the city. Heather and Little were honoured to be chosen for this Toronto cathedral restoration project. Primarily funded by Irish immigrants who lived in the area, the building is well known for its distinct lines and sharp geometric shapes that give the cathedral a unique exterior appearance. Construction on the church began in April of 1845, and finished in August of 1848, dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. The cathedral is still an active place of worship today, and home to the country’s largest English-speaking Catholic Diocese.

After decades of exposure to the elements, the cathedral’s slate and copper roof began to show its age and became a constant maintenance project, needing restoration. We were chosen to restore the slate and copper roof on this historic Toronto cathedral.

Slate & Copper Cathedral Roof Restoration Project

When Heather & Little took on this project, a complete slate roof replacement was necessary for the Toronto cathedral. This included extensive work on many elements of the roof, including lead-coated copper roofing, new dormers and steeple restoration with decorative copper ornaments. The main church roof was prefabricated with new slate, lead-coated copper dormers and a refurbished copper steeple with the decorative copper finishes. For these projects we made use of 20-ounce copper sheets, lead-coated standing seam copper roofing, and copper standing seam roofing on the steeple.
